Johne's Disease Control on Illinois Dairy and Beef Cattle Operations

Control

There is no treatment for Johne's disease. Specific control strategies must be tailored to each operation depending on the level of infection, the goals of the producer, the registration status of the herd, the type of facilities and the current management practices. Control takes time and requires strategic adoption of good management practices.

Test positive animals must be culled. Removal of only those cows that demonstrate the disease is not sufficient to control Johne's
Eliminate opportunities for fecal/oral transmission of M. paratuberculosis.
Remove calves from cows immediately after birth.
Reduce contamination of feed.
Use separate loader buckets for feed and manure.
Spread manure on crop ground, not on pasture to be harvested or grazed in the same season.
Purchase animals from Johne's negative herds.
Test ALL herd replacements prior to addition to the herd.
Restrict animals from stagnant water.
