Johne's Disease Control on Illinois Dairy and Beef Cattle Operations

Diagnosis

Fecal culture:

• Organism detection test
• Slow growing and requires 90 to 120 days for isolation
• Animals sampled must be shedding the organism
• May only detect one half of the truly infected animals

• Antibody detection test
• Rapid results (within days)
• Animals must have developed an immune reaction to M. paratuberculosis
• May only detect one half of the truly infected animals
• False positives are rare (1%).
