Johne's Disease Control on Illinois Dairy and Beef
Cattle Operations
Midwest regional surveys of dairy operations estimate that from 3-18% of all cows are infected. A Wisconsin study showed that 33% of Wisconsin herds have one or more infected animals. Since the disease advances through the herd at a slow pace, producers can expect about 15 to 25 infected animals for each animal showing clinical signs.
The NAHMS Dairy 96 study estimated in infected herds where at least 10% of cull cows showed clinical signs similar to Johne's, the average cost to producers was $227 per cow in the herd per year. The costs of Johne's disease in a herd can be attributed to:
