Biosecurity and Livestock Diseases

This web site of reference materials was prompted by numerous calls to University of Illinois Extension Unit, Center, and Campus offices regarding Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Bovine Spongiform Encepalopathy (BSE) and biosecurity. It is important to note that according to the USDA, neither Foot-and-mouth Disease (FMD) or Bovine Spongiform Encepalopathy (BSE) has been identified in the United States.

The information links are divided into disease categories with the title, source, and an active URL. To access any of these references, click onto the URL listed below each title and your web browser will take you to the article. The newest article, Biosecurity Considerations When Exhibiting Animals, is a broad overview of biosecurity measures to consider when exhibiting animals and was authored by Dave Seibert, Larry Firkins, Dick Wallace, and Mark Ernst

The list of URLs was compiled by members of the U of I Extension Animal Systems team consisting of staff from the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Animal Sciences. Inquiries regarding these materials should be forwarded to:
