West Nile virus first emerged in New York in the fall of 1999. West Nile can be transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito, has quickly spread across the country and was first identified in Illinois in September 2001. The first human cases and deaths from West Nile virus illness in Illinois were reported in August 2002. By the end of the year, the state lead the nation with more than 800 human cases and 62 deaths.
