Conclusions
July, 2007, has resulting exciting times for the dairy industry. Class three milk prices are at record high levels (over $21 per cwt). June, July, and August have been key times for dairy managers to catch up on bills and improvements. Milk-based food companies (Kraft, Deans, Hershey, and Star Bucks) are challenged as high milk prices squeeze profit margins. A surplus of organic milk is on the market lower prices while several large processors are not going to purchase milk from rBST injected cows. Consumer milk prices have reached five dollars a gallon on the east coast. Media personnel have been calling to ask when and if milk prices will decline (these high prices are short lived declining to $16 per cwt by the holiday season). Higher feed, fertilizer, fuel, and labor costs will require higher milk prices at the farm gate. Hopefully our DairyNet website will be a useful tool during these challenging times.
