Summer 2005 Newsletter
This issue of the DairyNet newsletter has been delayed; our last newsletter was in 2004. We continue to have excellent participation on our DairyNet web site (176 users a day with 470 pages reviewed). Our 2004 Illinois Dairy Report articles are on-line and 2005 Illinois Dairy Report articles to be added during the summer break before students return in late August. Several items are outlined below for your attention.
- On June 15 and 16 the Four State Dairy Conference will be held in Dubuque, Iowa. Go to the calendar of events on DairyNet to review the program and register. The program format is unique with several break-out sessions to pick from based on your interest and educational needs. Over 325 individuals have registered for the dairy conference.
- A new electronic searchable data base is available from ADSA (American Dairy Science Association). S-PAC (Searchable Professional Animal Conferences) contains complete conference proceedings from eleven national and regional U.S. dairy conferences over the last five years. Full length articles are key word, topic, and author searchable. The registration fee is modest ($50 t0 $100) considering most paper proceedings cost $20 to $30 to order. To review this new information resource, go to http://spac.adsa.org
- Another new website for your review is IL LIFT projects featuring distillers grains, pasture quality, livestock siting, and animal identification. The project was funded with a four year grant from the State of Illinois and will be populated with new material this summer. The direct link to the web site is at: http://ilift.traill.uiuc.edu/ or you can reach it from IL TRAILL web site at: http://www.traill.uiuc.edu/
- In the May 25th edition of Hoard's Dairyman, an editorial error incorrectly listed monensin (Rumensin brand name) can be topdressed to lactating and dry cows. Monensin can only be fed as part of a TMR (review the correct column on DairyNet here).

Conclusions
The Illinois and U.S. dairy industry will be facing tighter profit margins in 2005 as milk production is up 2.9 percent, cow numbers have increased from 8.99 million to 9.03 million cows, and culling is down 47,000 cows in the first quarter of 2005 compared to 2004. Strong milk prices, economical feed prices, and a mild spring has stimulated milk production and expansion. Summer heat stress and limited rains may impact feed prices and milk yield. Continue to send your suggestions and questions; we welcome your participation.
Have a great summer!
