Superior Young Sheep Producers Contest

The Superior Young Sheep Producers Contest is held each year at the Illinois State Fair. Any person over the age of 14 and showing sheep in the junior show at the state fair is eligible to enter.

The contest will consist of three parts. The first is a 50 question test worth 200 points. The second is a 60 question Skillathon worth 300 points and the third is a meats section worth 100 points. Three phase winners will be recognized with plaques in each section and the five people with the most points overall will each receive a $1000 scholarship.

This year the contest was held starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 8th, in the show ring of the South Sheep Barn. Awards were presented on Saturday afternoon before the junior sheep are released.

To prepare for the contest click on Livestock E-Quiz. There are 400 questions for sheep on this site and questions from this group as well as similar questions can appear in the test section.

For the Skillathon, practice identifying tools, feed stuffs, breeds of sheep, sheep problems, as well as anything to do with sheep production. The Meats section will call for identification of individual cuts of meat, where they are found on the sheep, as well as questions concerning lamb meat and the production and consumption of meat.
